Rocky Mtn fun on 081911

Unread postby mrjbigfoot » Sun Aug 21, 2011 9:59 am

Had a great trip out to Colorado this past week! Got to see my friend Annie & made it up into Estes Park, Rocky Mtns Natl Park and Table Mesa above Bolder yesterday and I'm back home safe & sound in Ohio today. Got a bunch of great pictures including some Elk, one of which was a nice 6x6 Bull. They were right down in town on the golf course in Estes Park. I took about 150 pictures, loaded 75 & did a slide show. It was kind of sad at one point when I pulled off in a dead man's curve type place in the mountains and I spotted a memorial from a fatal accident, about 20 yds down in the woods & 3 more at the bottom of a wall.. obviously not visible from the road, just there for someone to visit & remember..

Here's one of the pictures of the one Bull, there were 2 Bulls & a cow and then the slide show..

I was out there all week in a class for work, we got done at noon on Friday and I headed to the mountains, staying Friday night & flying home today. And this is Annie, we were great friends in high school. She goes rock climbing for a hobby & is in way better shape than me for being in the over 50 crowd! LOL!

Beautiful pictures! Did you drive up along the Big Thompson river? Very nice elk pics it is amazing how tame they act when there is no threats. I am heading out for a Colorado elk hunt on Aug 30th. I love Colorado in the fall.

I drove in on 36 out of Boulder all the way up to Rocky Mtn National Park, 36 & 34 come together & then split again in Estes Park. Saw multiple big hunting ranches along the way on private lands. It was a beautiful drive along a mountain stream but I wouldn't call it a river. Can't recall seeing any signs that said what the name of the stream was but there were folks fly fishing for trout in multiple places.

I've always gone through Loveland up 34, this travels along the Big Thompson, it is a beautiful drive any way you get up there. Did you go to Trail Ridge? There is a cool gravel windy back road called Old Fall River Road, I about gave my wife a heart attack on that one.

Liked the slide show....it just great country around RMNP. Look forward to going through there every year for elk hunting. And being part of the over 50 crowd too, it gets tougher every year hiking up and down those mountains.

Jackson Marsh....what unit are you hunting?

We will be hunting in NW Co. Unit 12. We hunted that unit in 2008 and had a great time.

I didn't get started on my way up there until around 1:30 pm so I didn't have a whole lot of time to start & then it started pouring rain about 4:30-5 & I had to drive back down the Mtn in the rain or I would've gotten even more pictures. But I still had a blast. ;)
