Good question...Let me tell you the thin air will kick your but if your not in shape. If your doing any kind of hiking and packing out do yourself a favor and get in shape. It will make the hunt that much enjoyable if you can't get to where you want to go w/o stopping for air all the time you will get frustrated quick.
X2 Great advice. My dad went out there elk hunting and I told him to start exercising to get in shape. One of his "friends" told him you cannot train for thin air, so he did NOTHING. His hunt was basically walking out to the edge of the bluff and scoping the valley below. Said he didn't dare go down the hill, cause it would of been getting back up. Id say his hunt was pretty much ruined by not being in shape. Sure you cant get used to thin air if your not in it, but my gut feeling is somebody in good shape stands a far better chance of navigating those hills, then the guy who thinks a walk to the mail box is a long ways. If you can find any sort of hill where your living, start walking up it a lot. Get a pack and weight it down and climb the hill. You don't have much time, so make the best of what you have. People who are not used to hills will find it extremely taxing. Id rather run 5 miles on flat ground, then walk up a decent grade hill for 3/4 of a mile.
