1st time with a red dot and I get a small wild boar...

Unread postby Liberty-Hunt » Wed Nov 20, 2019 8:54 am

Hi everyone,
I start big game season for the very 1st time here in France with a red dot on a Marlin 30-30cal.
It was a very nice surprise, so easy to aim...unbelievable. So during the bait hunt I sow a small Wils Boar going out of the bush at 55 meters not running fast and Boom right on the head.

So what do you think about the red dot vs iron sights on that gun?

I once had a 12 gauge Remington 870 slug gun set up with one of those weird (obsolete now), Weaver QwikPoint red dot sights.
I killed a lot of deer with it.

Low magnification scopes with lighted reticles and non-magnifying red dot-type sights are fantastic for fast shots on running game; there is nothing faster.
They show up particularly well in tangled brush and poor light that can sometimes make it hard to find conventional dark crosshairs.

In a few days I'll be hunting Wisconsin's upcoming firearms season on Saturday with a Remington 700 in .30-06 with a Trijicon 3-9X scope with the green tritium triangle reticle.

Sorry to answer so late...
Well, no doubt. It's a world of difference...so much more comfortable and so faster acquisition. It's like the differences between 1920's car and a new porch.

No problem at all! Thanks for following up.

I have my dad's old Model 94...seeing your setup made that cross my mind. Good to hear!

Congratulations. I understand that running boar is a common hunt in European countries. Probably an exciting time.

I use a Remington 700adl with a red dot on top of the scope, 2 of the last 4 bucks i have harvested were with the red dot. Both the red dot and scope are zero'd at 100 yds and I use the red dot to help me acquire the target with the scope.. Works really well... congrats on the boar.
