2018 WY Antelope
This year I drew a second choice antelope tag in eastern WY. I did some scouting the afternoon before opening day and didn’t see any antelope on accessible public land – all were on private. I thought it was going to be a tough hunt.
Opening morning was foggy and visibility was not very good. Soon after first light, I was walking into some state land when I saw 2 antelope about ½ mile away. One looked like a doe and the other one I couldn’t tell for sure what it was. I planned to cut them off several hundred yards in the direction they were going. I noted an area of sage in a sea of grass and made a beeline for that sage spot since that is where I thought I could cut them off and get a shot.
Soon I was out of their sight down in a little valley. As I approached the sage spot from below, I could not see the antelope, but I could hear what I knew were antelope vocalizations based on past experiences. I slowly crept up the rise so I could barely see over the grass. The antelope were 2 does. They spotted me almost immediately even though only my head was exposed. Then all of a sudden from the southwest, a buck came running in to meet up with the does. He had no clue I was there as he was interested in the does. I got ready for a shot, and as soon as he cleared the does, I put the cross hairs of my 7mm on his chest and fired. All 3 antelope took off running. After a short run, the buck went down. The does kept running, but then stopped to look back to see where the buck was. Only seconds after the buck went down, and the does stopped, another buck with wide horns joined the does and they all ran off. The shot was about 300 yards. My hunt only lasted about 30 minutes, but I had another great time in Wyoming.

Nice goat! Congratulations. I love Wyoming. I’ll be out there in two weeks for 18 days of deer hunting.

Congrats! That's a great buck! I haven't been antelope hunting in about 10 years. Definitely a good time.
