Wyoming Pronghorn

Unread postby Mountain Man » Thu Oct 29, 2015 10:20 am

Here's a public land DIY pronghorn from eastern Wyoming. I shot him on state land the last day of a 5 day hunt. The season had been open for 10 days before my hunt started and the bucks were difficult to find (I assume many had been shot already or pushed onto private). In the early morning I had just crossed a fence and a herd of 17 came over a ridge. They bedded down about 1/2 mile away. There was no cover between me and them. I laid in the grass along the fence with my pack in front of me for about 4 hours to wait them out. With my binoculars I could see at least one nice buck in the herd. They finally got up and moved off behind a ridge where I could stalk them. The big buck was lagging behind the group. When I crawled up and barely crested the ridge to the side of them, the nice buck had me pegged immediately from over 400 yards and he was facing me. The other antelope didn't know I was there and kept feeding. With it being the last day, I opted to shoot a smaller buck but at a closer range (~230 yards) with a better shot angle. He's not as big as last year's buck but it was a great hunt and it was good to get out west again.
