Optics for out west on a budget

Unread postby keb » Wed Oct 02, 2013 1:03 pm

Being on a budget what's the best optics going, I can get a deal on bushnell elite 10x42, this will before a high country alpine mule deer hunt, I can't afford the high end stuff, so looking for ideas? I don't want to pack a spotting scope and it, I plan on getting tripod for the binos.

What is your budget?

Nikon Monarch 10x42 are nice if you can spend around $300. I am very happy with mine and would buy another pair for sure if I needed to replace them for some reason.

X2 I've had Monarchs for years and really like them. Mine are 8x42 I believe.

Check out Redfield too.

I would say 300 to 400 dollar range, I just have talked to so many folks that say the optics will make or break the hunt, but I need to not break the bank.

Most say optics and the sleepping bag along with foot wear are the keys. I think I will wear gortex trail running shoes with gators and gortex socks.

Found it:

Vortex diamondbacks, I love mine so much I got 2 of them! About 150-200 and I would put them up against any glass under 1000 bucks without hesitation. I dropped my second pair and they split (totally my fault) and they gave me a brand new pair no questions asked.

Optics will make or break your hunt if you have cheap optics and your on a hunt where you are looking through them for long periods of time. you'll get eye fatigue and maybe headaches. I have Nikon monarchs and like them a lot. I also think the Vortex is a great glass. there are many companies out that make a quality product though. I think your budget will get you great glass and serve your purpose with no issues.

I know you're on a budget but if you're going to be mule deer hunting up by the timberline...you will regret not having a spotting scope. I bring binoculars and a spotting scope.

A great spotter for back pack hunting up high is a Nikon ED50 with a 13-30 eyepiece. It's a great combination of quality, cost and weight.

I was going to add a question to your post for you, seems YZF_88 kinda answered it. Lol You might want suggestions on what power optics you should have for a trip like this. I have never hunted out west, so can't offer any advice. I can tell you I have a set of Nikon binos that are 20x50 I believe and the power is adjustable. I would not buy them again! They are worthless above 16 power. I would of been better off with a fixed 15 or 16 power. I use them for survalance from the car or long distance across fields. I have smaller binos for hunting. Guess I would suggest buying the right optics for the job, not one pair to do everything. You will likely hunt out west again.
