Re: Maine Moose Lottery
Personally I apply 5-4-1-3-7-2-8-9-6-14. You might want to switch it up slightly if you were dead set on an archery hunt. Those zones will work in that order for archery as well, but you want to select that you would prefer to hunt the September season over October (7-8-9-14 don't offer September hunts). I prefer Septermber over October because the chances of you hitting the peak of the rut are much better. You can still get into some good rutting activity in October as well though, especially in zones further south.

Re: Maine Moose Lottery
So Maine Rut is early compared to other places? My understanding of the moose rut was thatyou wanted to be out therethe 1st week of Oct.
I'd be archery hunting. Thanks for the tips!

Re: Maine Moose Lottery
1st week of October is normally the peak, but we don't run a hunt that week. The hunt runs either the last week of September, 2nd week of October and now and November hunt (You can only be selected for one of those options. If you get picked you don't have a choice of which one you hunt, but you can put down the week you prefer on your application). The October hunt can be good, just last year we got into some pretty vocal bulls in October, but as soon as the ruts over, it's over and they get real tight lipped. September is the surest bet to have good luck calling. The heat can hurt you a little, but the first few hours as well as the last few hours of light are always productive.

Re: Maine Moose Lottery
Dor, I was on the Sept hunt with a buddy in 2010. The bulls were in pre rut/rut and callable. It seemed like the right time to be there. But what do I know?
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

Re: Maine Moose Lottery
Just to give you guys an idea of the caliber animal we have up here I will share a few pictures of some of the bulls myself or friends have guided in the last couple of years. Again these aren't all to my credit, but were all guided by people I know. Make sure if any one gets selected to let me know what zone you're in and I can point you to the right person to talk to.
Couple to show body size, they might be alaskans, but we grow em big!
