Arizona elk hunt

Unread postby Chad Gus 715 » Thu Mar 16, 2023 10:41 am

I got super lucky in the arizona elk draw, and drew a unit 27 early archery tag. Normally this tag takes 18-20 points as a non resident to draw, and i beat the odds with 7 points.
Next week i will start working out and once the snow melts around here, i will start shooting my bow outdoors and weighted pack training. Gonna dig out the elk calls, (wife gonna love that) and start practicing my calling. Already started looking at maps and some online research.
Most likely gonna be a once in a lifetime tag, so I'm gonna give it my best effort and enjoy the whole experience the best i can. I've elk hunted a few times, and been hunting the west for the last 25 years, so I'm fairly experienced in hunting the mountains. Zero experience in Arizona though, so it'll be a bit of a learning curve, but a challenge I'm super excited about. I'll update this thread periodically through the year and depending on cell service, try and give a semi live update once season starts

Man heck of a tag!! I’ve drawn AZ 3 times and arrowed good bulls all 3 times. No experience with 27 but hear it is rugged with some whoppers in it! If you can swing it hunt the whole two week season. Shot two bulls on day 10 and one on day 14.

Good luck and get in shape!

Been doing some internet scouting this past week, watching you tube videos, searching arizona hunting pages and some other online hunting forums I'm a member of. The early returns are looking very good, for a quality hunt, with lots of elk and lots of bull elk to chase around. Not holding my breath that I'm actually gonna kill one, but i should see plenty of elk and have multiple opportunities to get one. There having a good start to the year moisture wise and moon phases are lining up perfectly.
Gonna reach out to some people that have had the tag in the past and see if they will let me pick there brain a little bit.
