Jefferson Dam Walleyes on the Rock River

Unread postby BackWoodsHunter » Sun Mar 20, 2011 11:31 am

Anyone having any luck yet? We fished from 8-noon today on the rock river in jefferson below the dam. We tried the west side first. Right below the spillway there was easily 30+ guys shoulder to shoulder so we fished downstream where the crawfish and rock river meet. We only had to try to squeeze in between about 15 other people or so. The river was packed with boats. It was a ZOO. One guy caught and kept a nice pike, other than that we snagged a bunch of tiny sheepshead and one bigger one. Same with the guys around us also saw one big old carp caught. I personally saw no one catch a walleye. We switched to the east side of the river by the fish ladder and we shared that side with 4 other guys. The current through there was just too much. I got snagged and broke off so I laid down and took a nap strategically avoiding all the goose crap. No good fish were caught. Rough day on the water for sure. I will post a few pics later. Any other SE Wisconsinites fish the rock for walleyes this time of year? I think we were a little early. Also think the only bait shop in Jefferson with fathead minnows forgot to switch their clocks for daylight savings as they opened an hour late. All in all was a beautiful morning but I could have spent it doing something far more productive because the fishing sucked.

Todd Meyers called me and said he is getting the walleyes in greenbay... Bet the night time bite would be better in the rock river.

Good to know, I've never fished in the greenbay area before. I am done fishing the rock river in Jefferson there. If I go out that way anymore (probably won't though) I will head to Fort Atkinson. Its just a zoo. Do as many people fish at night there as they do during the day? Here are some pictures of our fine catch 8-)

Ok, now I know why I am seeing so many out fishing right now. Heading to my clients homes in Fort Atkinson and Jefferson I am passing a lot more folks fishing then I did last week or previous weeks.

You did better than I did , I fished below the dam in Sauk City and never even had a bite. There were 10 or 12 other people there and didn't see anyone reel one in either. I should have gone scouting instead, i wasted a nice day.

fished the river below the dam monday down to the turn. 1 legal sauger. Fished tuesday by the mouth going into Kosh, 1 short. It has been a terrible season for me and my crew. maybe our approach is better suited for colder, prespawn tactics. What we are doing, it ain't working...

Caught 1 eye at 15.5 and a short sauger yesterday.. Kept the eye along with 8 white bass... Some of the white bass were already milking...
