possible indiana channel catfish state record i caught....

Unread postby tresleggos » Tue Oct 19, 2010 9:10 am

fished indiana yest. morning with my brother in law , his daughter, and my son hunter . targeted some big gills and bass first.

After doing well i switched gear to going for some cats. i hooked up with some nice ones last year but got broke off a few times. so i caught a 7 inch gill cut it in half and used a double circle hook rig.
Image
45 mins later the line a tight and thumping a little bit. so i went over and set the hook.... (ten lb mono line) and had a solid fish on but figured maybe a 5 lb fish till i got the beast 10 yards to the edge of the water and it exploded and threw water everywhere. i was by myself at the time and by bro in law was shelling corn so i was kind of in a pinch . i lucked by mouthing the fish and was just amazed that this beast was a channel cat.

My previous biggest channel cat was from petenwell flowage and was maybe 5 or 6 lbs. i showed the family and they were estatic then i started think maybe its record book worthy. so i looked on the iphone and saw the previous was 38 lbs 7 ozs. i knew this was easily pushing it or larger.
So we made a quick jerry rigged aquarium to keep her alive till we could get it weighed.

official weight was gonna be today....so we will find out soon

Excellent Eric!!!!!! That is wonderful. Note to all, look at the little ones face (your sons, Eric, not you!!!!hehehehhe)........this is what it's all about. Sharing the outdoors with the youngsters, giving of your time, showing them the way. Then your time comes and you catch a monster catfish!!!!!! Kudos man!!!!! You are a class act, for sure!!!!

Big cats are notorious for yacking once going thru the stress of being caught an then getting put into the shock of cold well water. Did that with a giant 50# a few years ago an he spit up a 12# carp!
