Three Lakes Chain - WMT (June 19th/20th)

Unread postby Sam Ubl » Fri Jun 18, 2010 5:41 am

The Three Lakes Chain WMT Event has been an annual family tradition for my brother inlaw and myself. We’ve actually never registered a legal fish there, however, we’ve had some close calls. Two years ago we rushed in a fish that measured 33 7/8”, which is about the length of a toothpicks width. We measure the fish in some serious rollers and it appeared longer – looking back, it must have slid on the bump board at the moment it appeared legal. We’ve also drawn many follows, and even lost a couple knee shakers that were sure to get us on the board.
Shoulda, coulda, woulda’s are only voice deep, so this year is our 5th chance at turning this aging feat into a reward, which to us would be as small as getting on the board.
Wish us luck as we leave in a few hours to prefish tomorrow and go to battle on Saturday and Sunday. Full report to come on Monday.

Got a great suntan over the weekend, but came home quite a lot of $ money poorer. You could say the experience and what we learn every time we fish the Three Lakes WMT event is priceless, so no hard feelings to the hard $ spent.

We worked hard the entire time, never once resting, and most importantly, never losing focus in what we were out there to accomplish. Some may consider it work, but when the love for the passion runs deeper than the pain in your ribs and wrist, the end result is 16 hours of time well spent.

Temperatures were in the 80’s Saturday until noon when heavy cloud cover and some chilliness. Over night, temperatures plummeted to the upper 50’s making for awesome fog that loomed high in the trees early Sunday morning, but was quickly burned off by a HOT sun. Water temperatures held steady throughout the weekend at an average of about 68 degrees. Weed growth is slow this year on the chain, so cover wasn’t abundant in much deeper than 2-5 feet of water, such that structure, like breaks and humps, as well as reefs and boulders made up the spots to find.

Unfortunately, I lost a heartbreaker on Saturday morning after an intense battle and heavy headshakes. Within that same hour, I had another heartbreaking moment as a 40+ fish opened its mouth to eat boatside before my reel handle wrapped up in my line as I tucked the rod in to bring it around in the oval. As soon as my reel handle stopped moving, the lure did too and that fish backed off and looked at it for a moment before losing interest and swimming off. WOW, was that close and WOWWWW did that bite a big one! Upset and quiet, I fished on through the day, raising one more, as well as my brother inlaw who had a good fish up.

In summary, at the end of day one, 25 fish were caught, the biggest being 46.5” and the first being registered at 6:29 a.m., which happened to get caught in front of us on a little lake on that huge chain. 4 teams doubled up, suggesting some had a pattern going for them.

Sunday finally showed a pattern for my partner and I as we moved up shallow and began burning small blades as fast as we could reel them. By 8 am we had 3 fish going hot – one instance called for the net as a short striker who was hooked in the front of his beak shook off on the 8.

Long story short, we had our chances, but so did everyone else. Sunday showed a total of 5 fish caught, two of which were caught by the team that eventually sealed 1st place with a 43.25”, 41” (both caught on Sunday) and a 36.5”, which they caught Friday. Two others were caught by another well known team, Ryan Boch and Tyler Maney, who caught two on Sunday to add to there one on Saturday, which landed them 2nd or 3rd – can’t recall.

Great time on the water – see you next year Three Lakes.

Sounds like a good time out... At least you had your opportunities!
