Do red hooks really make a difference?

Unread postby Jeff G » Tue May 24, 2016 12:41 am

I fish quite a bit……last few seasons I have been changing over to red hooks on my crank baits (especially the back hook). I like to think it makes a difference, but not 100% proven.

Part of me thinks it more of a confidence boost than anything. Kinda like bed hunting, confidence is huge.

Whats your thoughts?

I kind of always went with this. If you use red hooks you'll catch fish on red hooks. It is so hard to tell sometimes because what we use is what we catch fish with.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

In my opinion most lures are reaction baits. Flash, rattle, and in shape of a bait fish and predator fish just react to it. Usually you almost drag it across their nose before they eat. Also, depending on water clairity, all the fish may see is the flash.

If bait fishing in clear water I would use the smallest hook and leader material I could.

In clear water red hooks in the front would mimic a Gill flash so I can see that being beneficial. But I would probably leave the back o es black

Saltwater fishing I use nothing but red hooks. I have no idea if it helps but it for sure doesn't impede a bite. Might have to do a side by side trip with exact same lure and different color hooks, but even that could be conditional depending on what the fish want that day.

I'm not sure how fish see, but I know to humans, red is not visible after 15 ft of water. It is the first color wave to be blocked out. That doesn't mean red things become invisible, just that they aren't red. If you are fishing in water over 15 ft deep, the red is probably pointless.

Cranks are reaction type bait and I don't think the color of a hook really matters too much. It's just another way the industry makes money, like 50 different colors of the same lure. Do you need all 50, no you can get by with a chartreuse, red, or shad depending on the water clarity IMO . But I do upsize all my trebles and go with a shorter shank.
