First Muskie
I've been hitting it hard this summer for Muskies. From June 1 (the opener) to now, I probably have a dozen trips to the lake and a few all day sessions in there. Last night it all came together. It started yesterday morning when I was drifting over a deeper 25' hole just off some great under water structure. I saw the unmistakeable outline of a muskie on my fish finder. I dropped some sinking bulldawg baits at her but she wouldn't move. I marked the spot and headed home for breakfast.
That evening the moon phase was perfect with a moonset of 7:28pm. I was at the same spot at exactly that time. I first made a quick grid of the deeper stuff and didn't see her on the lowrance. I figured she went a bit shallower to feed. I was right! 3 casts later and she hooked up. After well over a dozen follows and countless hours I hooked up on a great fish. She measured a hair under 50" at just 49 1/2". I was in a rush to get her back in the water and didn't have the right equipment handy to get a girth measurement.
The unorthodox grip on the fish is the result of fishing solo and being exhausted. I had to net her myself. After seeing all the commotion at the boat another angler stopped over and took a photo with my camera for me.
Guys, coming from one Whitetail nut to the others here, if you really want to get yourself in trouble with your free time just pick up Muskie fishing. It's a great off season fix that does it just like big bucks!

Great fish James! A 50 incher for your first is like killing a Booner buck for your first deer!
Now you will have the musky bug for sure the rest of your life!
Just arrived in the northwoods of WI today with my Dad to hit the water hard the next 4 days doing the same. Hope to put Dad on a good musky!

Re: First Muskie
Dewey you picked the right time, we're in the middle of the peak moon period and I'm a true believer. I've had mixed results on whitetails but with fishing it seems to coordinate so much better. Good luck to you and your dad, hope you slay a big one. Caught this one jerking in a walleye regular sized bulldawg if it helps at all. I moved a few on bucktails this past week but they didn't commit.

Re: First Muskie
My 2 largest fish came on Bulldawgs! Awesome bait!!
Thought tonight was going to be good for action but didn't move any fish. Tomorrow is a new day and looking forward to it very much. First musky trip I made this year so it's just like opening week of deer hunting for me!
