My Dads family use to snag salmon when it was legal in the Mishicot and Peshtigo areas of Wisconsin. They would throw them up on the banks and as kids it was our jobs to drag them and put them in the coolers. I guess getting us ready for our deer hunting careers. Then grandpa had a double out house that was moved and converted to a smoker. We as kids would have to run out and check out the temp to make sure it wasnt to hot or to cold. You cant beat fresh smoked salmon straight out of the smoker. It was amazing on how much of one fish a kid could eat.

My father in law said smoked northern pike was good, but hasn't smoked any for years, so I'm gonna try to catch a couple for the smoker. Will let you know how it is.......Anyone else ever tried smoked pike?

Just ate a chunk of salmon from when we went fishing yesterday morning, heaven in my mouth!

Spysar, don't be so close minded!

Whitefish are good too, but so many bones to work around. We only have been using one brine recipe for years.. My pa's got the secret recipe in his head but won't tell me it, only tidbits haha with time i'll put it all together.

I love me some smoked salmon! But you forgot EEL? That there is some good eating! I glow in the dark from all the eel, crabs and fish I ate out of the Hudson River:-). When I was about 10 my best friend and I had a 60 gallon fish tank we would fill up with blue claws and sell em for 50 cents a crab. That was in 1985!!! Getting back to the tred,'smoked eel is worth the try I really like it.

Chubs are less than bait around here...and someones eating suckers too?? blahhh....

I'm eating big slabs of flakey white boneless haddock and cod I caught. Bled and iced. Nothing compares...except when I was in Alaska eating the fresh halibut I caught.

Yeah I used to against my parents better judgement. The mayor of my town, when I was a kid (late 70's early 80's) was a commercial fisherman like many others in the area back then (20 miles north of NYC) they sold their catch to the local super markets. They caught, shad, blue fish, strippers, and blue claw crabs.

I've heard pike are pretty dry. But eel? haha if they were around here i guess it'd be worth a shot, after i power wash the slime off them!

I've been munching on some smoked salmon over the last few days from when we went on Lake Michigan and caught our 10 by 8:30 am, good experience and good food!
