After much research it seems to me if you want to put a significant dent in your predator population hunting and calling them probably isn't your best bet. Although, fun I think the more effective technique is trapping/snaring.
Anyone have much experience with snaring yotes?
I'm looking at the Power Ram snares but they seem a bit pricey.
Anyone have any other suggestions? Also, there's so many parts to it. What all do I need to actually buy?
Any help is appreciated. I just landed a new property with way too much coyote sign. Trying to save some turkeys and deer for 2012!

Re: Coyote Trapping/Snaring Help
my set up is
5/64 7x7 cable for a 5' snare
bmi mini, micro, or slim lock
#9 wire end swivel
3/32 7x7 8' extention, loop on each end.
loop to loop over the swivel. then choke a tree, fence post or blowdown for an anchor. also earth anchors if you have too.
find the runs. set your snare in the center on the run.
i like a 10" loop 10" high.
i use #11 wire pushed into the ground and use a wammy on my snare.
if teh ground is frozen i use a inverted S on 14ga wire for support. off a sapling.
try and check your line for a distance or by truck. your scent on the ground will change their travels. they will follow you, stop were you stop. i like to walk past my location, turn around and set on the way out. if you walk in, stop, set and walk out. they will do the same or stop right at your snare.
do not use jump sticks for deer. the little ones will duck under and you will catch every yearling.
anchor for the biggest animal you may catch. you do not want an animal running around with a leash on.
loop to loop
inverted S on a cross over log for a coon
small loop, but you get the idea.

those two places will supply you with what you need.
buy a couple dozen snares and extentions, support wire can be found at your concrete place-14ga, drop ceiling wire-#11-home depot.
mark your sets so you can find them. i dye with logwood powder. you can also dip with F-1 snare one sells it.
use surveyors tape or colored clothes pins. write down in you log book each set. do not leave them out there if your not checking.
we have a 24hr check here. everyday, second job, rain, slett, sick, hung over. check them.

Re: Coyote Trapping/Snaring Help
make sure you check your state laws on snaring. i know in pa you have to take a course to be certified to run snares.
